Assistant Director for Career Development

San Francisco

CCA seeks a skilled administrator and co-curricular educator to help prepare students in finding post-graduate success in multiple arenas. The Assistant Director will engage in functional responsibilities shared with the entire Career Development team, such as providing direct service to students via workshops and coaching appointments as well as building relationships with employers, and will also have specific areas of emphasis. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has the capability to work at the intersection of academic affairs and student affairs and who is simultaneously an effective administrator, skilled communicator, creative thinker, and educator.

In addition to serving as the primary coach for graduate and undergraduate students in Fine Arts, Writing & Literature, and Visual Studies and as the primary contact for CCA alumni, the Assistant Director for Career Development supports the Director in expanding the visibility of Career Development throughout CCA and building strategic partnerships with colleagues across the college. In particular, this position cultivates a domestic and international career community of alumni who may become employers or resources for CCA students and recent graduates and also develops programming around entrepreneurship and the arts. The assistant director takes the lead on collaborative initiatives such as sophomore-focused programs and support for first-generation students.

This position will reside in San Francisco with occasional visits to Oakland campus. Only local applications will be considered as this role is temporary work-from-home status. On site work is TBD.


Career Coaching - 45%
  • Provide advice, skill development, and coaching to graduate and undergraduate students in the Fine Arts, Writing & Literature, and Visual Studies
  • Serve as a primary coach for CCA alumni
  • Assist the Career Development team in providing support to CCA's significant international population(i.e. OPT workshops and programming); deploy technology to provide services to such students (and alumni) in their home countries.
  • Develop on-site and on-line programming in areas that will best prepare students for their future after CCA. Design and deliver programs on topics such as Entrepreneurship, Taxes, Financial Management, Creative Practice Development, Small Business Development.
  • Hold a lead role in planning and executing, such programs as CCA Sparks, Creative Careers Fair and Alumni Mentoring Program.
  • Arrange in-class visits with faculty
  • Provide timely content on programs, services, and resources for the Career Development website
  • Co-lead, with the Director, a peer advising program that expands basic services to students (e.g., resume writing, portfolio preparation). Develop a training program for peer advisors that provides intensive instruction prior to the beginning of the year, followed by a weekly meeting
  • Consistently evaluate student experiences with Career Development and recommend adjustments based on feedback

Career Communities - 15%
  • Develop a career community of CCA alumni, parents, and friends who have knowledge or connections that can bolster the efforts of Career Development.
  • Engage the career community in informal and formal interactions with studentson and off campus and through social media. Showcase alumni achievements and the multiple paths to success.
  • Collaborate with other staff to keep records of individuals who have a particular interest in assisting students with advice, connections, or opportunities.
  • Assist in increasing opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, full-time, free-lance, and contract work in student areas of interest via employer, outreach and alumni connections. Ensure access to these positions through CCA's job board.
  • Promote opportunities to interested students, using technology and social media. Expand the use of LinkedIn to better connect students and alumni.
  • Build relationships with faculty who have strong professional networks and with alumni at employers where graduates' skillsets will be most valued.
  • Identify and develop relationships with alumni at organizations that sponsor scholarships or residencies.

Strategic Collaborations - 10%
  • Support and lead collaborations with Alumni Relations staff, the Center for Impact; the annual Building an Artist's Life event; and in outreach to first- and second-year students. Partner with units throughout CCA (especially Academic Advising, Academic Affairs, Housing & Residential Life and Learning Resource Center ) to develop cross-departmental programs, lend support, and ensure Career Development representation.
  • Develop innovative pathways for working with Academic Advisors to provide information on how students can develop career-related skills and experiences during the first few years.
  • Participate in planning teams for Orientation-related events, such as Sophomore Summit and Junior Life .

Grant Writing Duties - 2%
  • Co-Write high-quality grant proposal narratives, applications, and supporting documents
  • Assist with researching, collecting data, and writing of each grant
  • Conduct prospect research to identify, cultivate and solicit new grants

Student affairs and Other Collaborations - 8%
  • Work in a professional manner to represent Career Development and Student Affairs and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive issues and records.
  • Partner with colleagues in Student Affairs by referring students to appropriate persons and/or available materials, scheduling mental health counseling appointments, and assisting students in accessing necessary information. Provide some support for Student Affairs events including Orientation, Chimerapalooza, and Commencement.
  • Student Emergencies: Follow student affairs emergency protocols and respond to mild to moderate risk-level student emergencies (missing students, physical health issues, victims of certain crimes, etc.) as determined by the supervisor. Respond to more serious student emergencies under the guidance of the Director and/or student affairs senior leadership.
  • Diversity: Follow CCA protocols for reporting and responding to sexual misconduct, harassment and discrimination claims, which may include serving as an intake officer or investigator. Help establish a student culture in which diversity is encouraged and where students learn to respect differences, take responsibility for their actions, and exercise leadership. Work to support a college-wide learning environment that acknowledges diversity and utilizes diverse tools and thought to raise awareness for how and what we learn.

Marketing and Communications - 15%
  • Lead/oversee marketing and social media communication and posting
  • Promote opportunities to students/alumni, using technology on CCA's portal page, community calendars and other social media
  • Expand the use of LinkedIn to better connect students and alumni
  • Work closely with CCA's MarCom Social Media Manager

Non-Essential Job Function(s) - 5%
  • Performs additional duties as required.


The Assistant Director will be an orchestrator of opportunity, someone who is keenly aware of the career resources available to students both within and outside of Career Development. The key requirements for this position are the capacity to gain an understanding of the career needs of art and design students and the multiple paths to success available to them and the ability to be creative in seeking out ways to illustrate and prepare students for those paths by identifying people, resources, or opportunities that meet those needs. An entrepreneurial bent and a strong desire to help students find success while at CCA and after graduation are critical characteristics. Knowledge of the work world of art and design is highly desirable. The assistant director must also be adept at using social media and viral marketing to promote programs and opportunities.
  • Bachelor's degree (BFA preferred) and a minimum of 2 years of professional experience are required, ideally in career development.
  • A master's degree in Career Counseling, Counseling, Human Resource Management, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or a related field is desirable.
  • Prior experience in a fast-paced office environment with significant student/client interaction required.
  • Candidates must possess excellent organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends (for special events) required.
  • Previous experience in higher education/community college and/or Non-profit Organization Management and/or education administration is preferred
  • Experience successfully working with young or transitioning adults, college/transfer student populations, BIPOC/diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds preferred
  • Experience with working in a advising and/or mentoring and/or teaching role required
  • Prior experience working directly with students, in-person or virtual, required
  • Ability to work independently. Dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population of staff and vendors
  • Excellent computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Pro; and the ability to quickly learn software programs such as the university's budgeting and analysis tools and enterprise systems
  • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with businesses and external organizations as well as staff and management within the various units of the organization
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Specialized Knowledge and/or experience with Fine Arts/Humanities Majors - Animation, Ceramics, Jewelry, Painting, Printmaking. Etc.
  • Skills: Computers/Technology(Excel, Adobe Suite, Instagram, Later (other social media) , Career/Advisor/Mentoring Development, Community Organization , Teaching/Tutoring Abilities
